Award-winning youth theatre company Kidz R Us is to perform fun and flirty, 60s pastiche musical A Slice of Saturday Night as part of its much-anticipated Summer 2011 season of shows. Kidz R Us, based in St Ives, Cornwall, is currently rehearsing A Slice of Saturday Night, a nostalgic look at British teenage life and love in the swinging sixties. The musical revolves around the romantic highs and lows of a group of seven teenagers one Saturday night at the Club A-Go-Go. Overseen by the club’s owner, ageing rocker Eric ‘Rubber Legs’ De Vene, the group’s escapades explore in an uplifting and humorous way the enduring rites of passage surrounding teenage fashion, music, sex and relationships. The show features an ensemble cast of performers aged 17 to 22 selected from the older group at Kidz R Us, led by Director Phil Barnett who also plays Eric. A live, four-piece band plays on stage throughout, and the score includes an array of more than 30 songs, many of them pastiches of popular 60s numbers. The show is slightly risqué in parts, so some parents may find it unsuitable for young children. This is the third time Kidz R Us has staged the musical, following repeated requests from local residents and regular visitors to the theatre. Phil Barnett, who co-founded the company in 1993, says: ‘We’re delighted to be performing A Slice of Saturday Night again due to popular demand. The show is hugely entertaining and packed full of great music, lively dance routines and groovy 60s costumes. It’s great fun to put on and perfect for anyone who lived through or is a fan of 60s, is a teenager or remembers exactly what it’s like to be one - which includes just about everyone!’ Seats are limited and tickets are selling fast, so book your place at A Slice of Saturday Night today. The show opens on Monday, 25 July and runs for four nights until Thursday, 28 July. Further dates are: 9, 16, 23 and 30 August; and 6, 13 and 20 September. All shows start at 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought from the Box Office, St Ives Theatre, Lower Stennack, St Ives, Cornwall TR26 1QG or by phone on 01736 797007. This year’s Kidz R Us summer season also includes: classic Broadway musical Annie; Footloose, an energetic stage adaptation of the hit 80s film; and aimed at three to six year olds, Jack’s Fantastic Voyage, which is running at the theatre now until 14 July, and will then tour festivals and other venues, including The Minack Theatre.
